Interestingly enough yesterday I had considered dusting off my keyboard to blog on media, politics and entertainment that has feared us into an anti-social state of being. But my day time job has blessed me with plenty to do and my free time with spent with my daughter and wifey so blogging hasn’t been a top priority.

Then Boston bombings hit today. More than even yesterday my thoughts are towards the fear we are bullied into. There’s a world full of good people. Cities full of good samaritans. However local, national, and international news shows the bad the bad the bad. Talk about instilling paranoia and anxiety in our overload society. We are in the constant mix of WiFi videos and headlines with ever shrinking story sizes. It’s a brain washing that technology has helped the sick and attention starved get their message to ears that otherwise would never have registered the information.

I’m not saying can your cell phone and laptops and get rid of the cable, but dare I suggest having the will power to pull away from constant coverage of the same tragedy presented mostly for ratings. Dare I suggest having the self-discipline to limit the hours spend with glowing messages engaging all of your attention and controlling your emotions, fears and impulses.

Just when I thought the US Postal service was done for it rallies like Rocky did in the moments that counted.

I opened my door to check the position on Hurricane Sandy, tree limbs, floods I’m interested in seeing the end of the world according to the news reporter who is being swayed around like a loose fire hose.

I notice something very interesting, is that mail in my mailbox? Yes, and in the mailbox comes a DVD I bought off Amazon weeks ago. I love when that happens, just when my day seemed to have amounted to nothing I get a package delivered to me that was unexpected. Even over night packages are fun to receive, although a little preplanned happiness.

All government departments have been closed since early this morning so how did I end up with mail. The bus and metro rails have shut down completely and will not be open tomorrow either. Wall Street has closed business for the day due to inclement weather, something that has not been done in 27 years. Schools are closed and everyone from offices around the beltway have called it in.

Amazing! The US Post Office in the spite of its bad reputation, lazy employees, and countless hours in their long lines; truly lived up to their creed: Rain or shine, snow or sleet, we deliver your mail! Ben Franklin had it right when he invented the Post Office, our citizens are 1st no matter the cause and today that was solidified in my mind.

Just as a good snow day can make way for old movies, music, books, magazines, all the things I can never find time to do I get the treat of watching a movie that I have not seen since I was a teenager. What luck of all days!

Now if only my power will stay on so I can watch it.

Top Tent Cruise Lines, which has become widely known for its popular singles-only pleasure cruises, made an unexpected port-of-call in Amsterdam Wednesday after it was discovered there weren’t sufficient condoms on board.

The large, ocean-going vessel had departed from the [Plymouth] United Kingdom and was well underway when the ship’s existing short supply of rubbers was discovered.

“We were sailing without necessities,” mainly condoms and jelly lubricants, said Jenna Long, a representative of the cruise line.

Once docked in Amsterdam, many of the ships 2,500 passengers disembarked for a brief shore excursion while condoms were loaded in bulk for the voyage.

After the ship’s supplies of condoms was replenished and the ship was ready to resume its voyage, a significant number of male passengers–all between the ages of 21 and 45-failed to return to the ship.

“Safety is No. 1 for us at Top Tent,” said Tommy Ivy, the cruise line’s chief executive officer. A few males, who staggered back to the ship prior to departure, were reported to be lethargic and non-responsive, making the rushed resupply of condoms largely a wasted trip.

Still, some men were looking forward to the adventure ahead. “Condoms are nasty son!,” said Bubba Grant, who chose to stay in his stateroom during the stop over in Amsterdam.

Freeman, of Hollywood, Calif., was roused from his sleep around 2:30 a.m. Thursday by officers from the Los Angeles Police Department who had received a text message from the department’s text line that a man in his 30s was dead.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office was first on the scene at Freeman’s home.

The story of Freeman’s death-by-cell-phone actually began early Wednesday evening, when Freeman was forcibly bumped by a fellow pedestrian after leaving an eatery on Melrose. The impact of this “person-to-person” encounter caused Freeman’s cell phone to fall to the ground, breaking it into several pieces. The damage to the phone was extensive. Several of the letter keys went missing and the “enter” key also became stuck, rendering the phone useless for anything other than receiving incoming calls.

The muted phone caused an unfortunate chain of events to quickly unfold.

A torrent of unresponded to text messages began to pile up on the phone — 13 by 9:43 p.m. Wednesday alone. Four of the texts came from Freeman’s girlfriend, six from friends, and three from his sister. Freeman could not retrieve these texts and was forced just to watch them accumulate throughout the evening. One the texts, that came from Freeman’s girlfriend, read simply: “if you don’t respond; we’re through!:/.”

After 42 unanswered text messages, Freeman was pronounced “dead” by his friends and family. Apparently no one bothered to call Freeman.

His non-response to repeated texting was read “Loud and Clear” by friend Joe Saunders.

To Freeman, the problem seemed simple enough. “I figured I would just get a replacement phone the next day. I don’t receive many calls as it is,” he said.

Moe Shamie, a representative with the phone store where Freeman purchased his phone, said Freeman’s cell phone “death” might have a silver-lining or might just be a sign of worse things to come. ”I sure hope he bought phone insurance. The retail price of these phones will kill anyone,” Shamie said.

Gap T-Shirts, Raybans, Converse Shoes, Bikes, iPhone, Acoustic Guitars, and Mini Fridges don’t exactly sound like it’s going to do anything for my daughter’s academic career. Click on the picture to see the items larger. Seriously?!

This may explain why America’s children rank #1 for self-confidence and #50 or so for reading and math.

Now to decide…iPhone or Samsung Galaxy III… which one will boost her Social Science grades? That’s like how well she does on Facebook and Twitter, right?

Literally three people TODAY have told me about it. Oh the instant hysteria.

Humanity will cease to exist, not from all of the diseases that seem to surround us these days but, from the shear magnitude of our collective sustaining anxiety.
