Smoking 2 Year Toddler

Posted on May 28th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky,Videos by TJSky

In Indonesia, little Ardi Rizal is racking up the bill for his 2 pack a day cigarette habit and getting alot of attention on YouTube.  I say “little” because he’s two years old.  Yup, two.

And you thought it was bad to catch your kids at age 12 stealing a ciggy out of your pack.

His father gave him his first cigarette at 18 months and he’s been hooked ever since.  He’s two, severely over-weight, smokes 40 cigarettes a day, and gets wheeled around in a toy truck because he’s in no physical condition to run and play with other children.  However, the parents see no issue.   The officials in Sumatra have taken notice of our 2 year old friend and even offered to buy the family a car if they get their son to stop smoking. The parents are unaffected by this offer.

Earlier in the year there was a different video of a 4 year old showing off his swearing and smoking skills while adults laughed in the background on YouTube.  Again, the adults saw no issue.

Why should they?  It’s not illegal.  Indonesia is the world’s 3rd largest consumer of tobacco products.  There’s a fight to pass legislation on age along side a fight to get out non-smoking public information, but that fight still has a ways to go.

One of many videos are below.  If the link is broken, go to YouTube and search “smoking toddler Indonesia”.  I believe it’s against YouTube’s TOS to show videos of children smoking.  Not sure why that should apply for a journalistic piece.

Laura Bush Supports Gay Marriage (?)

Posted on May 18th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

Laura Bush on Larry King Live

Laura Bush was on Larry King Live.  During the interview she revealed that she supports gay marriage and believes abortion should be legal.  She acknowledged it was a point of contention between her and her husband.  He was always aware of her opinions, but ignored them as he needed to represent the opinion of those in power in the Republican Party.

Laura can’t win for losing.  Liberals are attacking her because they feel she should have come out about this while her husband was in office.  Republicans are upset that one of their icons has gone against their manifesto.  Reality is she’s always hinted at her beliefs; further reality is that she was the woman behind a successful Republican politician.  While he was pursuing and in receipt of his desired power, she had to stand by his side.

Everyone wants to condemn someone if they don’t behave in strict accordance to widely accepted ethics.  Those same people aren’t nearly the masters of ethics they expect the rest of the world to be.

Wear Your Mittens If You Go To Saturn This Week

saturn 300x154 Wear Your Mittens If You Go To Saturn This Week

Saturn (the planet) is having one hell of a blizzard right now.  Five times worse than the blizzard that hit the DC area this year.  NASA’s Cassini spacecraft is orbiting Saturn gathering the most data ever collected about the storm season of the planet.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a NASA, European Space Agency and Italian Space Agency project.  The team is based out of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Amateur astronomers gave NASA the heads up about the storm, as they are able to view some of it from their “stations” here on Earth. Cassini’s observation spots and times are set months in advance; the spacecraft that is “right there” (comparatively speaking), misses spotting these events on its own.

When there was a comet that hit Jupiter last summer, an amatuer spectator took a picture and sent it to Cassini scientists for them to see what was going on with the aftermath.

I want to know why we care if there’s a snow storm on Saturn.  I want to know why two European space agencies have such an interest in Saturn and Jupiter as well.  Perhaps if scientists would make their motives known to the public, there would not be such an objection to funding and such.  It almost seems like we pay billions of dollars for some people to live on their childhood dreams of star gazing up close.

I’d also like to know why amateurs are more on top of things than NASA themselves.  I understand the observation spots for the craft are predetermined, but doesn’t NASA have an astronomer checking out the stars and planets from Earth?  Or are they so consumed with technology and money that the idea of using modest means of observation are beneath them?

Let me know your thoughts on this.

The Arizona Boycott…Did The Protesters Boycott School As Well?

Posted on April 28th, 2010 in News Headlines,Rants,TJSky by TJSky

There was/is an internet started boycott of Arizona tea.  This is to express grievances over the new immigration laws in Arizona.

Apparently, no one bothered to think or look up the company website to see that it is a New York company.  Who boycotts something without absolutely no research or backing?  Apparently a lot of idiots do.

Some who have reported on the Arizona tea misguided boycott have offered actual Arizona companies to boycott.  How is assisting a witch hunt any better than being able to harass someone who is Hispanic for no reason?

It’s not as if XYZ company out of Arizona lobbied and paid the politicians to introduce or pass the law.   Our Federal Government passes lots of horrible legislature; let’s boycott everything make or sold inside our borders.

Further, this could affect the livelihood of countless people who had nothing to do with the law.  During a recession nonetheless.

Imagine busting your ass at work for your company who is boycotted, suffers financially, then has to lay you off because the State of Montana passed some objectionable law.  How would that make you feel?

So yea, go target innocent businesses, that makes a lot of sense.

The GOP Trying To Keep The Black Man Down?

Posted on April 11th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

michael steele2 300x207 The GOP Trying To Keep The Black Man Down?

Michael Steele has been in some hot water lately over discretions such as taking some some RNC donors out to a bondage club in Hollywood.  His own party is calling for his resignation as leader of the Republican National Committee; many donors are no longer supporting the RNC.

I’m not condoning his behavior, but his behavior is very typical of those trying to navigate the political waters to reach the summit of success.   Several other Republicans have had much greater scandals, and they remain supported…they are also happen to be white.

Politicians, on both sides of the aisle, engage in horrendous behavior…much of which doesn’t see the light of day…unless they reach a pinnacle where their removal is desired by the envious.

It is simple food for thought on whether the objection to Steele’s actions, and subsequent lack of support, is truly based on the outrage over immortality, or roots from jealousy over a black man reaching a position of power amongst the rich and the white.

An additional morsel to chew on…I’m sure in life Michael Steele received flack from other African Americans for his membership  in the Republican Party.  Now that’s he is under fire, does he regret the isolation and time spent in a world that is not recognized as having open arms for his own people?

WVa Miners — One of Capitalism’s Latest Victims

Posted on April 6th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

capt.deb1ef51795249599c91d2ea1847b277 deb1ef51795249599c91d2ea1847b277 0 WVa Miners One of Capitalisms Latest Victims

The death of coal miners in West Virginia has everyone asking the man in charge, Don Blankenship (CEO of Massey Energy), why the lives of workers aren’t even worth meeting regulatory safety precautions.

Massey Energy has been cited for over 600 violations in less than 18 months for this particular mine.  Paying almost a million dollars in fines because of it.  These lapses include proper ventilation of the methane which most likely caused the blast that took the lives of twenty-five hard working Americans this week.

This isnt’ the first time.  In 2006, at one of their other mines, two miners died.  ”Wrongful death” cost Massey Energy over $4 million in damages.  That makes much more sense than investing in safety and people.  But hey, they make big profits…that’s all that matters.  Productivity is up, profits are up, and backs are broken by the class several rungs down from those enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Capitalism continues to evolve to new levels of disconcern and emotionless action.  Certain classes are just a wage to those who use the hard work of their subservients  to raise their class.  I bust my ass, but you get all the kudos and reep all the benefit.  It’s a sad reality that has existed since the dawn of the industrial revolution.

What is even sadder is in this town, where mining is essential to the residents’ vitality, people fear speaking out against this coal mining giant.  Despite Blankenship’s unscrupulous ways,  the folks that rely on whatever scraps are thrown their way are too afraid to speak their mind openly.

Blankenship gets to continue to tell his story.  The coal miners lost to the catastrophe of greed will never get to tell theirs.

Those Who Forget History Are Destined To Repeat It…

Posted on April 5th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

… or in this case, those who never learn history are destined to repeat it.

WarofWorldsNewYorkTimes Those Who Forget History Are Destined To Repeat It...

A newspaper in Jordan, for an April Fool’s prank, published that UFOs were spotted the night before with 10 foot giant aliens.  The “report” almost prompted the evacuation of 13,000 people.  Children didn’t go to school; the town of Jafr was in panic!

It was a harmless prank but officials are labeling it as a “big lie”.  What the hell is wrong with these people?   Someone tells me they read aliens landed last night, I’m probably going to ask how much they’ve been drinking.  Use some common sense.

This is a testament to what happens in a culture of disinformation.  A lack of worldly understanding and diversity let them slide into the ignorance of 80 years ago.

1938, when radio and its varied entertainment programs still were novel to many families and households, Orson Welles broad-casted “War of the Worlds”.  This was a story acted out as if the town was in an alien battle.  People were in panic mode, particulary those who tuned in later and missed the beginning  it was just a play.

It is 2010, why is there a place on this earth that is so naive and sheltered that the irrationality of 80 years ago still thrives?

In fairness, the same can be said for the United States reliving the Great Depression almost a century later.

What A Surprise – Ricky Martin Is Gay!

Posted on March 29th, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

ricky martin 20060804 149995 211x300 What A Surprise Ricky Martin Is Gay!

I’m sure that is surprising news to absolutely no one.

Ricky announced via Twitter that he is gay and can no longer hide it.  He is now a father of two boys and doesn’t want to live a secret life.   Good for him.

Not that we all didn’t know that like a decade ago, but good for him.

He has started to write his memoirs that will be published (of course).  Writing it all out made him realize he needed to shed the secrecy and embrace a life he should have celebrated.

I can’t help but to think that this is rather timely of an announcement if he is going to release a book — everyone will want to buy it to get all the details — you know he’ll be on Oprah.  I wouldn’t be surprised if a CD followed.

I don’t want to cheapen someone’s self-realization and label it as a marketing ploy….but since I’d venture to say that is what Ricky (and his PR) is doing, then I’m gonna go ahead and cheapen it.  No better way to get your name in a headline in the US after several years off the map as announcing you’re a boy who kisses boys.

Toyota Shareholders Suing Because Their Stocks Went Down…Aw, Poor Babies

Posted on March 21st, 2010 in News Headlines,TJSky by TJSky

toyota trounces gm 300x212 Toyota Shareholders Suing Because Their Stocks Went Down...Aw, Poor Babies

A bunch of whack-job Toyota share-holders are suing Toyota for the price of their stocks falling.  Wouldn’t we all like to sue companies whose stocks we hold and decrease in value?   Their spin is that Toyota maliciously covered up the acceleration issues and made excuse,s like floor mats getting in the way, to deliberately make stock prices continue to rise.

Basically their claim is that Toyota didn’t declare a design fault that would cause the acceleration issues and would ultimately bring stock prices down.   That’s like suing Compaq for not keeping up with Apple’s technology…a flaw in the design of the company’s competitiveness…yet it’s a risk when you are in the computer industry.  They invested in a car company; shit happens…like recalls.  Just because it’s not Ford or GM doesn’t mean Toyota would be immune to the errors that can occur in vehicle manufacturing.

I agree that Toyota fucked up the handling of the recalls, but I really think that was more their inexperience in recalls…not the big wigs in the board room plotting how to keep stock prices up with their mad scientist laughs.  As you saw in my prior post, I’m glad Toyota was humbled (and I’m a Toyota owner), however, I find it hard to fathom that their focus was to fool investors.  I would say it’ll be a hard case to prove.

3-14 is National Pi Day (the math number, not the punany)

Posted on March 14th, 2010 in Funny Pictures,LOUD&lowbrow,News Headlines by LOUD&lowbrow

math 3 14 is National Pi Day (the math number, not the punany)

Today is March 14th: National Pi Day.  A day for all of geekdom to celebrate the number that never ends and I never understood.  They picked March 14 because Pi to us dummies is 3.14 — to the kid that got A’s it’s like a 3.14 with like a thousand freaking numbers after it.

I guess geeks deserve something to celebrate too.  I got St. Patrick’s Day, my favorite holiday, coming up.  I get to celebrate all things alcohol…so let them have their Pi.  It’s probably the only “pie” they’ve seen in a while anyway  :)
